This page sets out how the record is put together: how the eighteen hotels were chosen, how the numbering works, where the material comes from and what is deliberately left out. It applies to every entry on the site without exception.

How the hotels were chosen

Four sections were fixed first, and the hotels were chosen to fill them: art hotels, capsule hotels, casino hotels and buildings of ice and snow. Every hotel on the site is a real, working house that can be found at the address given. Nothing was chosen for being remarkable, and nothing here is put forward as better than anything else.

How the numbering works

The numbering runs from the first entry to the eighteenth across all four sections and does not restart inside a section. A number belongs to one hotel and appears in three places: the index on the home page, the line of numbers at the head of the section and the entry itself. Sections are shown by the range of numbers they hold.

Sources, and what is not here

Entries are written from hotel material, from maps and from published sources. Where a detail could not be confirmed, it was left out or the sentence was rewritten to stay true without it.

There are no prices, no star categories, no verdicts, no room counts, no reviews, no booking buttons and no partner links. Hotels are not compared with one another, and nothing is promised about weather, access or availability.

How to read the winter section

The buildings in the winter section are made of ice and snow. Each of them stands for the winter season only and is built again from the beginning the following year, often to a new design. Dates are not given here because they depend on the winter. Ask the operator about the season, about access and about what sleeping in a cold room involves.

Where an operator also keeps heated buildings or year-round accommodation on the same ground, the entry says so.
